8 TRAITS THAT ATTRACT OPPORTUNITIES & PEOPLE

By | Personal Style, Psychology, Work Style | No Comments

I’ve been asked many times ‘How much does my appearance really matter?’

And I’ve always answered, a lot, when the occasion is important and if we are unknown because it’s the visual basis from which others will decide if they are going to interact with us or not.

BUT…Our clothes are only a clue to who we are inside.

Most of us want to be thought of as a person of merit, someone who leaves a positive mark on their family, friends, and community.

We all know the people of merit; those who stand apart from others and are the ones we can trust and count no matter what. They make us each feel important and bring security and value to our lives and to the lives of others. While they care for their appearance they are not vain, instead, their clothes reflect their inner qualities

They are a far cry from those who style themselves only for show while exhibiting little regard for other people, their feelings or occasions.

This time around I thought I’d touch on the traits that set a person apart, making them a person of value to all they come in contact with? The traits are in no particular order as each is equally important in my eyes.

10 TRAITS THAT ATTRACT OPPORTUNITIES & PEOPLE, Honesty, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image Consultant tools and resources.

HONESTY

Honesty is so much more than the act of being truthful. The best way to think about it is to define what dishonesty is – “any act or omission that causes or allows another to be misled“. Suddenly honesty is much more than not telling lies. Honesty is not engaging in word games, subtle distinctions, misdirection, concealment or omissions.

Honesty is about being real with yourself and others about who you are, what you want and what you need to live your most authentic life. Honesty promotes openness, empowers us and enables us to develop consistency in how we present the facts. Honesty sharpens our perception and allows us to observe everything around us with clarity.

Honesty does not give you license to hurt people with the truth by legitimizing what you’ve just said with “I’m just being honest!” Whether in your personal life or your professional one, honest opinions shouldn’t be used to destroy a person’s confidence or diminish their potential.

10 TRAITS THAT ATTRACT OPPORTUNITIES & PEOPLE, Caring, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image Consultant tools and resources.

CARING

This is an incredibly important trait. The person who cares about others, their wants, needs, and feelings are seen as a tower of strength and believe me there will be times when we all need someone to care for or about us.

Some people make it a practice not to care about all manner of things for fear of appearing weak or being hurt but that only leads to a confined life. Caring for and about others does not guarantee we won’t be hurt or abused but it does allow us to grow and develop into a well-rounded person.

Emotional connections with others make us more fulfilled and help us lead more complete lives and our acts of caring and empathy are not only noticed by others but they shape us into happier beings. If we shut people out for fear of being hurt we also deduce the possibility of finding another person who may make us happy.

10 TRAITS THAT ATTRACT OPPORTUNITIES & PEOPLE, Trustworthy, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image Consultant tools and resources.

TRUSTWORTHINESS

Trust is earned one deed at a time. It’s proving to people that you are a person of your word and can be relied upon to do what you have promised.

Being consistently a person of your word you’ll be rewarded with the support and loyalty of others resulting in strong relationships and leadership opportunities. In fact, without trust, there will be no relationship built or doors opened.

Trustworthy is also being a person who does not share things said to them in private, nor spreads gossip.

10 TRAITS THAT ATTRACT OPPORTUNITIES & PEOPLE, Respectful, Respect, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image Consultant tools and resources.

RESPECT

I could go on forever with this one…it seems to be a quality that is slipping further and further away each day as people put themselves before and above others.

Respect is a right of everyone and up until a person breaks that respect you should always show it. In fact, you can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat others, particularly those they have nothing to gain from.

Respect builds bridges and brings people to a place of trust and shows them they have value. From the homeless person, we pass on the street to those in power, everyone deserves our respect until they do something to lose it.

10 TRAITS THAT ATTRACT OPPORTUNITIES & PEOPLE, Humility, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image Consultant tools and resources.

HUMILITY

This is a trait that you can’t prove but one that people can quickly see when you display the opposite trait i.e. pridefulness, snobbery, arrogance and vain.

To have humility is to demonstrate that every person you encounter is equally valuable and you are no better or more important than anyone else.

The person who is humble is grateful for what they have, listens to other people’s views, accepts we are all fallible, asks for help when they need it (Oops, I fail at that one), is modest about their achievements and seeks feedback from others on a regular basis.

10 TRAITS THAT ATTRACT OPPORTUNITIES & PEOPLE, Friendly, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image Consultant tools and resources.

FRIENDLINESS

Most of us are attracted to people who are outgoing, welcoming, fun-loving and enthusiastic. Likewise, those who see the positive, lighter side of life and are kind.

Friendly people make our lives richer because they are inclusive, which includes looking people in the eye, smiling and acknowledging them to inviting others to join them be it sitting next to them or going out socially. Being friendly is a state of mind that affects not only the recipient but also the giver as it improves mental and physical well-being.

10 TRAITS THAT ATTRACT OPPORTUNITIES & PEOPLE, Confident, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image Consultant tools and resources.

CONFIDENCE

Confidence is a trait that attracts people immediately. It’s not arrogant or aggressive but rather assertive; it’s knowing you are worthy of speaking freely to express your ideas, opinions, and values. Confident people speak with assurance, are not afraid to take the lead or to show their enthusiasm for ideas and projects. They are consistent in their behavior and beliefs and portray an image of strength, be it physical, mental or both.

10 TRAITS THAT ATTRACT OPPORTUNITIES & PEOPLE, Generous, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image Consultant tools and resources.

GENEROSITY

There are many forms that generosity can take from freely giving of one’s time, money or energy and each act is one with no expectation of return.

Generosity like confidence is a trait that when practiced improves the givers mental well-being as much as it does the receivers circumstances. To give without expectation of return is an act that improves the givers life because it causes us to focus on what we are giving rather than on what we are receiving. It creates a more outward orientation toward the world, which shifts our focus away from ourselves.

The world will be a better place for everyone if we practiced more of these thing each day. It’s not hard, it just takes a little mindfulness and practice.

THE GOLDILOCKS PRINCIPLE OF ACCESSORIZING

By | Accessorizing | 4 Comments

Goldilocks knew what she wanted when it came to porridge  – not too hot or too cold but just right.  The same ‘just right’ principle can be applied to accessorizing.

By knowing some simple coordination principles, you can save yourself valuable time randomly trialing lots of different accessories until your outfit ‘looks right’,

I call them the Big 3:

Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Scale Weight and Harmony, Style Clinic, Image innovators, Ann reinten, Image Consultant Training, Image Consultant Tools and Resources

Once you understand how these three elements impact your outfits you’ll not only find accessorizing easier, you’ll also start to realize it is possible to bend the rules i.e., wear a large scaled item if you are petite or have a small frame.

After reading through this feature spend some time in your closet to determine which elements your accessories have if they work with your scale and how you can mix and match them in new interesting and flattering ways

So, let’s begin…

SCALE

This refers to not only how large the accessory is but how well it coordinates with your personal scale.

When it comes to the female form there are 3 main scales: small, medium and large. Knowing which one you are will help when selecting the best scale for your accessories.

Women considered small scale are usually short to medium height, have small features and are underweight to slightly overweight.

Medium scaled women can be any height and are commonly between slightly underweight and moderately overweight.

Large-scaled women are usually medium-tall to tall, larger than most women in build and are between slightly underweight and moderately overweight.

The Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image consultant resources, How to Accessorize

Accessories can also be assigned a scale: small, medium-small, medium, medium-large and large. When you work with scales that flatter your frame the look is harmonious, and you remain the main focus. The best results come from you wearing the accessory, not it wearing you.

The Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training, Image consultant resources, How to Accessorize

You can use the following guidelines to coordinate accessories, hairstyles and prints to your personal scale.

If you are:

  • under 5’4″ / 162.5 cms and have a small frame wear small to medium accessories.
  • 5’4″ to 5’8″ / 162.5 to 173 cms and have a small frame wear small to medium-large accessories.
  • over 5’8″ / 173 cms and have a small frame, medium-small to medium-large scale accessories will suit you best.
  • over 5’8″ / 173 cms, have a medium frame and are slightly under to slightly overweight you can wear any scale of accessory.
  • under 5’8″ / 173 cms and moderately to very underweight you are best with small to medium sized accessories.
  • 5’4 to 5’8″/ 162.5 to 173 cms, have a medium frame and are slightly under to slightly overweight small to medium-large scale accessories are the way to go.
  • 5’6″/ 167.50 cms or taller and have a large frame wear medium to large accessories
  • If you have a large frame and are more than moderately overweight, select medium to medium-large accessories.

VISUAL WEIGHT

An accessory should be in sync with the weight of an outfit – not the actual weight but the visual weight.

How heavy an outfit or accessory appears to be is often a result of a combination of factors such as its colour, material, surface and opacity.

Colour

Two objects of the same shape and actual weight may appear to be lighter or heavier than each other. Take these two boxes, for example, if I asked you which one appears to be the heavier, you’d probably say the darker one. Light colours have the lease visual weight while dark colours appear to weigh more.

The Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, How to Accessorize, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training and Tools, Visual Weight

Look at these floral dresses. The lighter one is not just light in colour but also in fabric; coordinating accessories in a similar weight creates balance. Likewise, the navy floral dress is made of a thicker fabric and when teamed with dark jeans works beautifully with flat suede mules.

The Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, How to Accessorize, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training and Tools, Visual Weight

Surface

The surface of an accessory can be matte (reflects no light), have some sheen (reflects some light) or be shiny (highly reflective). The more matt the item the greater its perceived visual weight. When coordinating accessories, you can leverage its reflectivity. For example, a large-scale item that is light in colour and/or has a reflective surface will coordinate and harmonize more easily on a person with a small frame.  The Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, How to Accessorize, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training and Tools, Visual Weight

In the left-hand photo below the flat lace-ups harmonize with her bulky sweater while the patent leather lifts and lightens the shoe to better balance with her gauzy skirt. In the right-hand photo the dark, polished stiletto boots pair perfectly with this trans-seasonal outfit giving the ‘just-right’ visual weight. Most matt surfaced pumps/court shoes can look very heavy in summer while a polished surface is better and patent leather will totally lift and lighten the look.

The Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, How to Accessorize, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training and Tools, Visual Weight

Opacity

This is how solid/dense or transparent an item is. Like ‘surface’, the more opaque the item, the heavier it will appear to be. In the photos below you can see how opacity affects the visual weight and scale of a necklace. Click here for more on visual weight.

The Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, How to Accessorize, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training and Tools, Visual Weight

Fabric

Likewise, with fabric; the following two light coloured outfits have different fabric density and design weight and as a result are most complemented by like weighted t accessories. Light with light, heavy with heavy. Whereas the blue outfit on the right is better balanced than the one on the left. The lightness of the fabric, the amount of skin exposed and her slight figure all serve to make her over-knee boots appear a tad to heavy for the outfit.

HARMONY

One of the keys to accessorizing is knowing how to pair the shape of accessories to that of the outfit or body part that it is position near to.  This is particularly important with necklaces, earrings, hats, handbags, and prints.

Necklines

If the edge is ruffled, embellished or asymmetrical opt for statement earrings with a shape and colour that echoes the dominate design line and go without a necklace.

If the neckline edge or collar is simple you have more coordination options.  Follow its shape if you are not sure.

To discover all the necklaces and earrings that suit you along with every other item you wear I suggest purchasing a personal style program from My Private Stylist.

The Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, How to Accessorize, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training and Tools, Neckline AccessorizingColour

There are so many ways to work with colour in a pleasing way. The easy and most effective choices are: add a metal of the same undertone, a neutral, complementary or analogous colour.

The Goldilocks Principle of Accessorizing, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, How to Accessorize, Image Innovators, Image Consultant Training and Tools, Colour Combinations

Prints

When it comes to prints near your face consider how busy they are, their size, how bright or dull it is and the dominant design line.

If the print is busy or bright (left-hand photo below) opt for medium-small to medium-large understated earrings, a large but relatively simple ring, and no necklace.

If the print is busy or large and away from your face, select a statement necklace or earrings for balance.

If the print is large but not busy opt for either medium to medium-large understated earrings or necklace which have similar design lines and/or a related colour.

YOUR STYLE PERSONALITY REVEALED

By | Personal Style | 13 Comments

Not everyone has a personal style as recognisable as Iris Apfel’s but everyone does have their own unique style. Some just haven’t discovered it yet.

Whats Your Style Personality, Image Innovators, Ann Reinten, Style Clinic, Womens Style, Personal Style Expression

Do you know what your style is and if you do, does your wardrobe reflect it?

Yes, No, Maybe

Have you ever tried on a garment that took your eye while shopping and once on thought OMG “I love it…it’s sooo me!”

If you have you’ve experienced the rapture of finding an item that is in perfect sync with your unique personal style expression (PSE). For some, this perfect find will be nothing more than a favourite item, worn often because it makes them feel so good. A lucky buy if you will.

For others it’s a find resulting from knowing what their personal style is; not just the label Classic, Dramatic, Natural etc, but from having a real understanding of what garment and accessory elements make up an item that truly expresses their authentic self.

If you have not found your style yet this feature is for you.

Personal style expression is an important aspect of style; it’s the element that makes you unique and if truly you, it makes your heart sing.

In a Marie Clare feature Psychiatrist, Dr. Samantha Boardman was quoted as saying “When you wear something that makes you feel great, the effects may be subtle — the way you tilt your head, your facial expressions — but they matter.”…“The right outfit can help you feel more confident when you need it most — it can serve as both armour and inspiration.”

Your personal style while appearing to be external is actually deeply internal. It reveals who you are in a way that is entirely unique to you while also lifting you up to be the best versions of yourself

To put it simply, your personal style matters.

Of course, it’s not the make or break, factor of style but rather an important element that when united with figure flattering, age and lifestyle appropriate styles combine to create your unique style blueprint.  Leave any one of these elements out and you can find your style satisfaction slipping.

Whats Your Style Personality, Image Innovators, Ann Reinten, Style Clinic, Womens Style, Personal Style Expression, Clothes Should

Your personal style expression is conveyed through the garments and accessories you choose to wear and the way you wear them.

An important point to also add is that your personal style is ever evolving, time and life experiences can cause us to express ourselves differently. For example, I’ve worked with women who were prominently feminine who after experiencing a prolonged traumatic event such as cancer or a nasty divorce have found their style to have evolved into Natural or Classic as their dominant as a result of having to get tougher to have survived the experience. For others, the change may come because they have become more confident or liberated over time.

I work with 7 main style expression types of which almost everyone falls into a mix between two types with one being dominant and these pairing result in 49 possible classifications. In fact, even a third type can be present.

Main Types: Classic, Elegant, Natural, Dramatic, Feminine, Sexy and Creative

Whats Your Style Personality, Image Innovators, Ann Reinten, Style Clinic, Womens Style, Personal Style Expression, Style Personalities

You will find variations to all the types and classifications depending on the person’s location, culture, and adaption to each part of their lifestyle. For example, a woman who had Natural as their dominant type and classic as her secondary may find herself increasing the classic influence to be taken more seriously at work.

COLOUR ESSENTIALS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD KNOW

By | Colour, Style Clinic | 5 Comments

We take so many things in our world for granted. Take colour for instance, have you ever stopped to consider the impact it has on your world and in your life?

Far beyond making what you wear appear more interesting colour can:Colour Essentials Every Woman Should Know,Colour Analysis, Image Consultant Training, Image Innovators, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten

  • make us appear younger or older,
  • larger or smaller,
  • healthy or ill,
  • smarter or dull-witted
  • it can sway the thinking of others,
  • change moods
  • cause actions and reactions.

That’s pretty amazing when you stop to consider it and a natural tool we can harness to look better and get more out of our social connections.

In today’s feature, I’m going to cover some of the most impactful elements of colour in relation to the clothes we wear and the makeup we apply.

First off, there are a few important things to know when understanding the relationship between you and your best colours.

  1. The more qualities a colour has that match the qualities of your skin, the more flattering the colour will be.
  2. The colours you wear above your waist mater most when it comes to making your skin, hair and eyes look best. Colours worn below the waist need only be considered has to how they will alter the perception of size.
  3. You can wear almost any colour if you know how to bend the rules in your favour.

A colour analysis through a trained professional is the only reliable way of discovering your best colours.

Relative Temperature
7 Essentials of Discovering Your Best Colours, 7 Essentials of Discovering Your Best Colors, Colour Analysis, Image Consultant Training, Image Innovators, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten

The basic colour wheel can be divided into cool and warm segments with the cool colours containing more blue/violet undertones and the warm containing more yellow/orange. However, as colours from either side of colour get added the perception can change i.e. a cool colour can appear warmer and vice versa.

Green and yellow are great examples.

With green (the colour with the largest gamut) you can easily see how the hue can move from cool to neutral to warm as it has more blue or yellow added to it.

Yellow, a colour with the second smallest gamut and considered warm becomes cooler as green is added and even warmer when orange is added.

Colour analysis is based on Relative Temperature (how warm or cool colour is as it is influenced by warm or cool colours that sit either side of it).

In most cases, a person’s skin can be determined to be primarily cool or warm. Colours that are more neutral are those that are easiest to wear for the greatest amount of people. If your undertone is primarily cool, then colours that are cool to neutral and sometimes even neutral to warm will suit you depending on your colour direction. Colour directions such as DARK cool, BRIGHT cool, LIGHT cool, LIGHT warm, SOFT warm and SOFT cool span between warm and cool colours.

It’s also worth noting that dark and very light colours can be deceiving as these depths tend to appear cool.

Intensity

This quality of colour refers to how clear/pure/saturated or muted/muddy/desaturated a colour appears. This is an element that I’ve found most women get right naturally. Many clients I’ve worked with tend to have garments in the right intensity but the wrong temperature for them.

Clear colours are crisp and clean. It’s easiest to see pure colours when they are light to medium in depth.

Muted colours are smoky, soft, greyed and there are, of course, colours that look neither obviously pure or muted and these like neutral temperature colours are easy for many people to wear well.

Colour directions such as COOL clear, BRIGHT cool, DARK cool, WARM clear, LIGHT clear, BRIGHT clear wear Clear colours best while COOL muted, LIGHT cool, SOFT cool, WARM muted, DARK warm and SOFT warm are best with primarily muted colours.

The grey-haired woman below is COOL muted and looks overwhelmed by the bright clear pink while the blue is less intense and more flattering on her.

Like temperature, dark and very light colours can be deceiving as these depths tend to appear more pure/clear.

When it comes to human skin the same elements are present although we rename Pure, Clear.

Value

Also known by some as Depth is how light or dark a colour is.  Your personal skin value, contrast and colour direction will determine your best colour depths/values. For example, women who are light in colouring tend not to wear very light and dark colours well and are best staying within medium-light to medium dark for clothing and makeup. In the images below the black turtleneck is harsh/stark against the model’s skin and hair and can be especially draining is she is over 50. Charcoal or navy is a far better choice for women who have pale skin and eyes.

Impact Contrast

Contrast is all about how you combine your best colours for the very best result. Various levels of contrast are achieved by placing colours of different depths and Intensities next to each other. It is slightly different from the contrast taught in art lessons when it comes to high contrast.

Don’t they all combine well since they are the person’s best colours I hear you say?

The answer is yes and no. An individual’s best colours all coordinate well with each other, but they may not look that great when worn on you in all circumstances. For example, we can wear a single solid colour near our face, two or more colours when layering i.e. a top, vest and statement necklace or a print comprising of various colours.

Confused? Don’t be, it’s simple really and depends on your colour direction. For example, the woman below has the ID colouring of a Cool muted and has both these colours in her range. While both are in sync with her skin the cocoa coloured outfit while calm and elegant does little to enhance her overall colouring (skin, hair and eyes) because it is too close in depth/value to her skin colour. Understanding which contrast level best suits, you from your colour range makes putting together a versatile, mix and match wardrobe much easier.

So, what are these contrasts?

Low Impact Contrast

This is when colours of the same or similar depth are placed next to each other. Take the example above of the model in the light cocoa coloured top against her skin. It’s a colour from her range but worn next to her face provides little visual impact.

The same occurs when considering prints or layering garments, colours like: like a burgundy sweater and a forest green jacket or a lemon top and linen vest. While the colours are different the Depth/Value of each is almost the same and depending on your colour direction may do you no favours.

Low contrast is effective for times you want to blend in and listen then take part or be noticed.

Medium Impact Contrast

This level of contrast is created when you can discern a distinct difference in value/depth between colours this is occurring in the image below where the model is wearing blue. The colour not only lights her face it also makes her appear more alive and youthful,

Medium contrast is noticeable and approachable and great for times you want to be noticed and shine.

High Impact Contrast

These are colour combos from your colour range that are very different in brightness, not just value/depth. They are colour combos that make you say WOW. High Impact can be achieved from most people’s range of colours but just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Some colour directions will be overpowered by a colour near their face, in a print or through coordinating layers if the result is high contrast. – see the example pink top below.  Directions like BRIGHT cool and BRIGHT warm wear high contrast best.

High contrast is most useful when you want to stand out and be noticed, though it’s so strong you’ll need to approach people as they may not feel comfortable to approach you first.

Don’t stop at clothing when you consider impact contrast, the same effects can be applied to your makeup and hair colour.

Surface

The colours we wear are often affected by the fabric they are in; smooth fabrics allow the colour to show in its full intensity will textured surface tend to mute colours down a little. Colour directions who are primarily Clear i.e. COOL clear, DARK cool, BRIGHT cool, WARM clear, BRIGHT warm, LIGHT warm are all best wearing smooth/fine to slightly textured fabrics while directions who are primarily Muted are best in slightly to very texture fabrics.

As a side note, the more textured a fabric is the more it will attract dirt.

Reflectivity

This is how well a fabric surface reflects light, think cotton, reflects no light/is matte and satin which reflects a lot of light and is shiny. While everyone can wear matte surfaces, colour directions who are Clear look amazing when they add shine; this could be a shiny top or a glossy lipstick,

Women with more muted colouring i.e. COOL muted, LIGHT cool, SOFT cool, WARM muted, SOFT warm and DARK muted, are best avoiding high shine as it can look at odds with their more toned down, matte skin. Think matte lipsticks and textured garments.

Garments with a surface between matte and shiny are said to have ‘sheen’, think silk, and lucky for everyone it suits everyone and is a great way to add a little elegant glamour.

SIDE NOTE: sheen and shiny fabrics in close-fitting garments will show every scary little lump and bump you may have so be sure to done shapewear to create a smooth finish to your silhouette. Alternatively, select garments which skim your body.

HOW TO WEAR WHITE

By | Colour, How To... | 2 Comments

What are thoughts about wearing white?

I believe it can be worn all year round. However, clever dressing means not only wearing the white that best suits your natural coloring but also knowing how to coordinate it with other colors to ensure you get the best look possible.

The Basics

The great thing about white is, unlike black, there is a form of white for every type of coloring.  In fact, according to Pantone Inc., there are more shades of white available commercially than any other color. Whites can be found in shades from the purest, brightest whites to off-white, magnolia and ivory and the best places to experience the gamut of whites is a bridal boutique.

There is a white for everyone, Types of white,How to Wear White, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image innovators, Image Consultant Training Online, Image Consultant and Stylist Resources

There 3 main color considerations:

Temperature

How warm or cool it is. Pure whites are best for Cool and Clears (aka Winters), Soft white for Cool and Muted individuals (aka Summers). Cream to Ivory for the Warm color directions (Warm and Clear / Warm and Muted – aka Spring / Autumn)

Intensity/Clarity

The degree of brightness or dullness of the white. Clear bright forms of white are best for the Clears directions (Cool and Clear / Warm and Clear, aka Winters and Springs).  Softer, muted shades for individuals whose colors demands softer, less bright shades ( Cool and Muted / Warm and Muted – aka Summers and Autumns).

Contrast

When worn above the waist and as a solid color next to your skin. Some individuals need definite light and shade (contrast) between the color they wear and their skin. I’ll explain this later in the feature.

Pros of White:

  • In the western world wearing white is seen as summery, youthful, sharp, clean, open-minded and efficient.
  • Pure white is easy to keep clean as it can often be bleached back to its original brightness.
  • Like black, it is a color that coordinates with all other colors and is a fantastic canvas for accessories of all types.
  • There is always an abundance of white in the stores.

Cons of White:

  • Being a light color it advances and enlarges the area it is worn over.
  • In some countries, white is the color of death and mourning.
  • White can be boring, clinical and unimaginative if worn without accessories or embellishments.
  • For those who have the color direction of Cool and Muted (aka Summer), they will always look best in a color other than white.
  • Being such a light color it is generally not slimming and therefore, a strategy on how to wear it on your largest area needs to be in place.
  • It’s a one wear, one wash color.
  • It can discolor easily under the arms through perspiration. here are two great features on how to remove stains from and bleach white clothes.
  • It is notorious for being see-through.

When it’s wrong to wear white

I’ve often been asked about the correct timing of wearing white. The only time I feel that white is not right is to a wedding. It’s the bride’s day and she needs, deserves and wants to stand out. I know many do so for what it’s worth I’ve added my thoughts in the images below.

Not wearing white after Labor Day is one of those old rules that has dissipated over time – winter or summer it’s fine to wear white if you know how to pull it off.

Other than that it’s really a matter of practicality i.e. wearing white to somewhere you’ll get dirty is very smart

Practicalities

  • When wearing white above the waist select a white with an Undertone and Clarity that best suits your skin tone.  There’s no getting away from it if you have cool coloring and the white has a yellow tone, the garment will tend to look dull and possibly dirty. How to Wear White, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image innovators, Image Consultant Training Online, Image Consultant and Stylist Resources
  •  If you are full figured or larger below your waist, when wearing white below the waist either:

a. wear a top with some volume, and in color to draw the eyes upwards.
b. look for a style that has no cuffs and is in a sturdy fabric.
c. if you bum is less than bootylicious – ensure your top covers it – see image below.
d. wear a white open blouse, jacket or vest with a colored top underneath to create a longer neck to hem silhouette.

  • White is a color that requires a high quality, opaque fabric to look best.  Because of its tendency to be see-through ensure you hold the garment up to the light to judge how sheer the fabric is and avoid pants with pockets or have them removed and the pocket is sewn shut.

  • Wear lingerie that matches your skin color.

  • White dresses are best when they are not skin tight white will advertise every lump and bump you possess. The best shapes are those that loose and flow over the body or semi-fitted shape.

How to Wear White, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image innovators, Image Consultant Training Online, Image Consultant and Stylist Resources

  • Wearing unadorned solid white can be visually uninspiring unless the dress has strong design lines/features.
  • If you are a clear color direction it’s a good idea to add a pop of color via embellishments or accessories.
  • If you are a muted season either look for a textured garment or add an accessory or embellishment near your face.

How to Wear White, Style Clinic, Ann Reinten, Image innovators, Image Consultant Training Online, Image Consultant and Stylist Resources

  • While white dresses are best kept for summer, if you add a jacket they will often work well into early winter.

  • White garments look best when you have a tan or have dark skin. If you are pale skinned try a spray tan for an instant fix.
  • Women with cool, light, muted skins tend to best in a color than they do in white. White tends to be too plain on them – see first model below.

  • Team white in summer with light, bright, metallic or skin toned shoes and in the cooler months team with black or tan.

Winter White

  • Long gone is the rule of not wearing white in winter. When teamed with, monochromatic highlights, neutral colors and cozy accessories such as fur and boots white quickly becomes a winter highlight.

AM I TOO OLD TO WEAR THAT?

By | Fashion, Figure Flattery, Personal Style, Style Clinic, Trends | 19 Comments

After fifty most women’s style naturally begins to evolve to harmonize with the changes in their lives. These changes do not have to herald your change from stylish to dowdy; they simply mean a rethink of the trends that cater to your changing circumstances and shape.

All women regardless of their age, shape, weight or height can look amazing – all it takes is the know-how and a little practice. Can I hear you say… ”yea and the money!”?  If you did, know that money has little to do with style and everything to do with the elements below.

YOU’RE AS YOUNG AS YOUR FACE AND SPIRIT

The first thing to get a grip on is what age you appear to be and feel.

Many women do not look or act their age. I’m not talking about a woman who is sixty and acts twenty-five, but one that looks and acts forty-five when she’s sixty-five.  She knows her personal style, seeks current styles of clothing and accessories that flatter her shape and work with her lifestyle.

It is apparent age rather than true age that we should look to when deciding if we should wear something.

SKIN EXPOSURE

Within these bounds knowing where to draw the line with skin exposure is probably the most important thing when it comes to being stylish over 50.  When it comes down to it, there are several areas of our body that tend to give away age: our face, neck, hands, upper arms, thighs and cleavage being the main culprits. I’m always saddened when I see a 50+ woman in short shorts or thigh-high miniskirts – it speaks of poor self-awareness and difficulties dealing with aging.

NECK TO CLEAVAGE

How much you expose depends on the condition of your skin and the length of your neck. I’ve found that while some women agonize over they neck few other people notice it if everything else is up to par. V-neck and open collars flatter necks that are getting shorter or fuller and are always on trend.

The upper décolletage on most women remains reasonably firm and smooth and allows for many neckline trends. It’s only deep necklines that expose cleavage that can expose a somewhat wrinkly cleavage that should be avoided if you wish to appear more youthful. Keyhole cutouts are modest for everyone and put a chic feel into an outfit while off-the-shoulder can also be thumbs up because it remains stylish without showing too much skin!

UPPER ARMS

A common place that concerns women over 50 and a giveaway of age if showing signs of untoned skin or dimpling. Opt instead for bust to half-length sleeves and there are plenty of wonderful bell sleeves to choose from at present. Also, worth mentioning is sheer sleeves which allow for the best of both looks.

THIGHS AND BACKS

Length is a huge topic on a “am I too old to wear this,” list.

Someone of 60 shouldn’t be wearing a mini skirt that a 16-year-old would wear if their goal is to project a polished style and the reason for this is our thighs which are generally, not our best feature after 50. I recommend you avoid dress and skirt hemlines more than 2”/5cms above the knee, high splits and shorts no higher than mid-thigh. To carry-off, a dress or skirt hem higher than mid-thigh add opaque hosiery to subtlety blur the length.

Likewise, deep backs on evening gowns and swimwear can reveal sagging flesh.

FIT AND SHAPE

Not only is age a factor when it comes hot how something fits but it’s an overall rule for anyone. If something feels uncomfortable or constricting and it’s highlighting unflattering bulges, it’s not flattering or stylish. Either don some shapewear or give it a miss. If there’s one thing I’ve learned along the way past 50, it’s that comfort becomes a priority for most women. Not because we’re lazy or unstylish but we’ve been there, done that and are over it. There’s plenty of flattering and stylish things to wear without being squished into shape.

Far more comfortable and flattering are garments that skim your curves.

No matter what your shape, weight or age garments that reveal shape will always be more flattering than those that are straight – especially if they are boxy and stiff. The shape of garments are is psychologically linked with youthfulness and agility while the reverse is true of shapelessness.

Am I Too Old To Wear That, Style Clinic, Image Consultant Training, Stylist Training, Image Innovators, Ann Reinten, Fashion, Over 50 Shape and FitSource: Image 1, Image 2, Image 3

WAIST

This is an area that can become difficult if your middle is thickening. If you have a long body and defined waist, high waist designs will always work in your favor. A high waist can create a flattering fit and it is also on trend.

If your waist is high or mid-torso short, look for skirts and pants that are waistbandless or have narrow waistbands and when adding belts match them to your top rather than the bottom.

If your tummy is full either blouse your tucked in top or wear it out and to a flattering length.

COLOR, PATTERN, AND ACCESSORIES

These are the fashion elements where you can really have fun with your style and stay current without breaking the bank or putting yourself too far out on a limb. They are often the linchpins of fashion which can thrust your classic outfits into the here and now.

Any overly loud or bright prints are better substituted with those which are medium to low in contrast. No need to only stick with classic color palettes but do make sure you select colors that suit you. It’s OK to go quirky or artsy so long as they are not too bright for your coloring or too large for your scale. With the numerous patterns and colors out there, you’ll be sure to find details that fit your style!

TRENDS

While there are new trends that come to light which should be left for the younger generation such as crop tops, some sheer designs or overly dramatic pieces, there are always plenty you can rock! At the moment it’s fringes, feathers, ruffles, and metallic which are all never too young or too old to wear. If they speak to you, then go for it! Even if it’s head to toe fringe!

MAKEUP

As throughout a woman’s lifetime, great skincare is the secret to healthy, youthful skin. Even if you’re only starting now, do start to care for your skin. My skincare of choice is SKII and I highly recommend you use a hyaluronic acid serum before your cleanse.

Before applying foundation add a skin primer, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the beautiful smooth surface it will give to your skin. Next, add concealer to hide any dark areas or unwanted redness.

When it comes to makeup trends, avoid heavy foundations, too much face powder, dark or bright lipstick or eyeshadow and large false lashes. Aim for a fresh face, natural to classic look.

Be sure to add some light blush, mascara, eyeliner, and brow powder to define your look.

AGE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

 Is it too revealing?

  • Is it too shapeless?
  • Is it too bright?
  • Does it fit well?
  • Is it me/my style?

That golden question “am I too old to wear this,” is easy to answer with a process of elimination. Try things on, see what fits best, what looks good, and most importantly, what you feel comfortable in. Never stop experimenting with your style, pick and choose, try new trends, but most importantly have fun with your clothes, age is just a number!

HOW TO ORGANIZE & RUN A SWAP & SHOP PARTY

By | Fashion, How To..., Shopping | 2 Comments

We all have clothes sitting in our closets that we more than likely will never wear again. With trends always evolving, that polka dot dress you used to love and is now a closet orphan can be turned into someone else’s new favorite! While we seldom need an excuse to invite the besties over there’s never a better one than a Shop, Swap Party.

Send out the word and get everyone cracking cleaning out their closets and finding long lost style treasures to bring along.

Here’s my tips on how to organize and run a clothing swap party.

Invites

The first thing to start the process of your clothing swap party are invitations. Sending out invites at least two weeks prior to the date will give enough overhead time to prepare, a month before is also appropriate. It’ll give everyone time to clean out their closets and go through their goods. Limit the numbers to 5 to 10 people will help in not creating an overwhelming number of items plus it’ll keep everything organized. Creating a theme is also a fun alternative to just calling it a clothing swap party. Sip and Swap, Ladies Shop Swap Night, Swap and Sangria, there’s tons of unique names you can come up with!

Set-up

Set-up and organization is key to show off a cool shopping environment. If you have garment racks and coat racks that’ll be a huge plus. They’ll enable you to be able to hang and group items together. Have a table display to neatly lay out jewelry and accessories. This will give your guests easy access and room to place the items they bring. Eliminating clutter is always the best way to throw a successful clothing swap party.

Create a fitting room area also helps and is great for our more inverted girlfriends. This stays with being organized and gives your party a fun shopping environment. Try to organize at least two full length mirrors to help when more than one person is trying on clothes.

You could even go the extra mile and set up a photo backdrop. This is easy, fun, and is always a hit with guests. There are many ways to create a back drop that fits the theme of your invitation. Think colors, balloons if needed, streamers, and anything else that comes to mind for your designated photo area.

Food and Drink

When it comes to what food and beverages to serve, consider the clothes and accessories first, because you never want anything ruined from spills. Finger foods work best as well as non-greasy items. Be careful about liquids and types of alcohol, red wine is never a fun stain to remove. Keep your food area and clothes well away from each other. You can also make your party pot luck style which will make it easy on you with others bringing appetizers and drinks.

Limit the number of items someone can bring. A minimum and maximum number of items helps maintain the chaos of stuff being all over the place. This also goes along with the shopping process to ensure everyone gets the right number of picks that are quality finds.

All items should be in good to great condition. Be sure to not that the items your guest are bringing are still of good quality. Nothing should be faded, tattered, or basically unwearable. Vintage is always great but to a certain extent.

Take turns shopping. To avoid craziness, draw names and distinguish an order of shoppers. Having someone pick one item at a time, this will help keep things moving in a timely manner. Have this flow going for a couple of rounds then move on to fittings. Fittings will determine if you’ll keep what you’ve picked, if the item doesn’t work then simply have it put back for others to shop.

Everything not swapped needs to be either taken home or you can opt to have a donation box handy which you can volunteer to take to the Op Shop.

Shop, Swap, Donate

Once shopping and swapping is complete, gather up the items not claimed and donate them to local charity. Not only have you thrown a successful clothing swap party, but you also are doing it for a good cause!
