14 TRENDS WORTH TRYING IN 2016

By | Inspiration, Trends | 7 Comments

As each season rolls around it’s good to enliven your style with a few well-chosen trend items. Look for hero items that speak to your personal style and seamlessly meld into your existing wardrobe. The aim for your new items is to add a new dimension to your tried-and-true outfits, create new ones and generally make your outfits feel fresh again.

In 2016, it’s all about relaxed silhouettes. Construction and restrictive clothing are out. Ease of flow and ease of lifestyle is IN. Laid-back elegance might seem like a paradox, but it isn’t. This year, designers are envisioning an effortlessly elegant woman with no airs about her while simultaneous rocking a sequined mini in the daytime. The only rule is never force anything; whatever you wear should look and be effortless. For inspiration look to the 70s and 90s.

I’ve compiled what I see as the most wearable trends from the many on offer. Choose one or a few, the most important thing is that you feel authentic and comfortable in what you wear.

WINTER TRENDS

Army Fatigues

Take the fall/winter staple hue of army green and inject it with some tough gal chic – the result is army fatigues. This season’s must-have print is an excellent way to mix up your wardrobe, especially when paired with an unexpected piece such as a fur coat or pointed toe ankle strap flats.

Sculptural Jewelry

Wear a piece of art on your wrist or around your neck, this season’s sculptural jewelry trend takes statement accessories to a whole new level with pieces sculpted out of metal and Lucite. The architectural and artistic feelings of these pieces go beyond the usual sparkle of your usual baubles.

Reefer Jackets

This year’s big outerwear trend is inspired by the Navy uniform – let me introduce you to the 2016 reefer jacket. Double breasted with large lapels or collar, the reefer jacket, takes your outerwear game toward edgier territory.

Vertical Stripes

While horizontal stripes play a place in every woman’s wardrobe, this year it’s vertical stripes that are taking center stage. Especially when in an in-your-face graphic pattern, these bold additions will increase clout of your fall/winter staples. Layer them under a turtleneck or wear over your black tights, vertical stripes lend any look  a thoroughly modern, arty feel.

Vintage Chic Loafers

Grandpa’s trusty loafers are the inspiration for this fall’s must-have flat. Look for details like wide, intricate or prominent buckles and a pronounced square toe for maximum vintage appeal.

SUMMER TRENDS

Slip Dresses

With the deluge of 90s trend comes the ultimate must-have defining piece of that decade—the slip dress. Worn on its own, underneath a jacket or over a top, there’s no denying the allure and innate sexiness of the slip dress. If you feel it too sexy, tone it down with earthy leather or with a white T-shirt.

The Prairie Dress

This dress expresses a different type of bohemian aesthetic: they’re less fringe and crazy patterns, and more about braids, raw hems, and rustic florals. Consider the prairie dress your go-to frock for summer frolicking.

Embroidered Denim

70s styles have been dominating street style blogs and designer runways for several seasons now, but this year we’ll see a resurgence of the 90s with embroidered denim. While floral motifs are still prevalent, you’ll also see clever graphic interpretations and they won’t be limited to jeans. You can opt to don your embroidery on your denim shirt, jacket or bag.

Pajama Dressing

Laidback dressing is the mantra of this season and what could be more relaxed than pajamas? If you’re game this year’s pajama silhouettes can take you beyond the bedroom to downtown. If you can’t bring yourself to don the entire PJ ensemble, pair the top or bottom with luxe leather and statement sunnies.

Neon Trainers

White sneakers are so last season. This summer, neon hues dominate the sneaker culture and will provide your casual looks with a punch of bold color. Embrace them and you’ll soon find your state of mind in sync with the color.

YEAR ROUND TRENDS

Rose Quartz and Serenity: Color of The Year

I can’t make a trends list without adding Pantone’s colors of the year. In case you’re not in the know, every year color trend forecasting company Pantone pronounces its choice for color of the year. For 2016, it is all about rose quartz and serenity. These two hues invoke tranquility when worn on its own and when worn together. Both hues are already starting to dominate the market, and both are subtle enough to wear every day. Given both colors complement each other, the sartorial possibilities are endless.

Flatforms

My pick for the footwear silhouette du jour for 2016 is the comfy flatform. Choose open-toe flatforms in metallic for summer or flatform oxfords or creepers for fall. This style echos the laid-back feel on the runways. From summer to winter, you can wear flatforms – it’s simply all in the styling.

Bags with an Attitude

Fashion is increasingly becoming more and more expressive. This season, clutches and minaudiere come in all manner of cheeky shapes, sizes, colors, and themes. If you’re a fashionista or have a love for the quirky, you’ll be shivering with excitement to add one of these bags to your wardrobe.

Palm Bracelet

Last year was all about midi rings, this time, around palm bracelets are ruling the accessory game. The palm bracelet is another in-between accessory that ups the glam of your arm candy. Well, in this case, it is, technically hand candy.

THOUGHTS FOR A NEW YEAR

By | How To..., Inspiration, Psychology | 22 Comments

2016 is about to dawn and with a new year comes the promise of new opportunities, fresh starts and better and exciting times ahead.

Whatever your dreams, to achieve them you’ll need supportive friends, a positive mindset and a sound plan to keep you on track. Big goals require courage, commitment and resilience. With every set-back you rise from, you’ll grow stronger and wiser – so never, ever give up. Those who reach their goals are rarely the brilliant or talented but those who have persevered long after others have given up.

This week’s post is a collection of wise words from the many people who have influenced my life (especially my parents).

New Beginnings

~ Never be satisfied until you have found your purposeNever stop searching for why you were put on this earth and what your God-given talent is.

~ Find something that you are passionate about. Passion creates the enthusiasm that delivers boundless energy and will inspire others to believe in you.

Build your future on integrityBe a person of your word. The unity of passion and integrity is a powerful force.

Don’t do or say anything you would not want to read about in tomorrow’s news – you are a person of influence, whether it be to your friends, your children or your clients. If you lie, cheat or mislead you imply to others that it is acceptable behavior.

Take a little step toward your goal/dream every day – even if you can only spare five minutes.

Appreciate the journey – many successful people will tell you that once they arrived at their goal, they realized that the journey was the best part.

Associate with people whom you wish to become like – the old saying ‘lay down with dogs, rise up with fleas’ has its basis in fact.

Try to make wise decisions – the choices you make will affect your future just as they have created your present circumstances, take the time to think things through and seek wise council.

Expect to make mistakes - They are life’s most valuable lessons. Failure only comes when you have not learned from a mistake and you repeat it.

Expect things worth having not to come easily – Success is the reward for struggle and hard work.

Never forget your potential - even if others do.

~ No matter how much you look forward or dread something, it always passes; nothing is permanent so hang tight and appreciate every moment.

Find someone who believes in you – negative people will only rob you of your potential.

~ Hugs your kids often and call your parents every week. Tell them you love them – they need to hear it more than you realize.

Evict your personal critic – when your inner voice starts to undermine your confidence, send it packing.

Create a personal success file – and add to it daily, even if it is something small. Read it once a week to remind yourself of your progress.

Do something nice for another person daily – without expectation of return. This can be as small as letting a car in, during peak hour or giving someone a genuine compliment.

Spend time with your friends and family – they are your most valuable assets. Life is short and its length unpredictable, so get up now and go phone someone.

Nurture yourself – eat well, exercise, get enough sleep, take regular time-out and spend time with those who love you.

Value yourself – Don’t feel guilty if you occasionally spend money on yourself or buy something frivolous. Shrouds don’t have pockets and you’re definitely worth it.

Occasionally do something silly - The best stress-reliever and depression-buster is laughter.

Pray for guidance and expect an answer.

HOW TO REINVENT OUTFITS

By | How To..., Inspiration, Wardrobe Savvy | No Comments

Next time you feel bored with your look instead of heading to the mall for some new fashion pieces why not get creative and reinvent your present outfits. Hiding in your closet are many new looks and combinations just waiting for you to discover them.

1#. Flirt with sheer tops

This little styling trick is great to not only mix up your looks but also to softly camouflage heavy upper arms, and to help transition a sleeveless summer dress over the fall period.

2#. Pair pants with dresses and skirts

Instead of your trusty pair of leggings, try a pair of fitted pants instead. Add them under a skirt or dress, a pair of pants for a look that’s been making the rounds lately. When in a leather or sateen type fabric your outfit will take on a luxe look.

3#. Button-up

Bored with an old jacket or need to ramp up its polish? Swap the old buttons for new ones. Believe it or not good buttons are expensive and are often the first place a manufacturer will reduce costs. From vintage to quirky buttons all the way to top of the range, new buttons will definitely give your outfit a new look.

4#. Reuse and repurpose

Repurposing your clothes is the best way to reinvent your look while saving your pennies and the planet. From doing it yourself to using an alteration service, the reward is worth the effort and creates a truly unique garment.

5#. Shorten, taper, shape

Sometimes all it takes is an alteration to make an unworn garment into a hands-down favorite. Shortening, tapering and shaping are all techniques that can totally reinvent a garment and your shape. At this juncture, it is important to say that a good relationship with a great tailor or seamstress can be extremely beneficial to your style.

6#. Accessory mix-up

Get creative and mix up your accessories to a display your unique style and twist on fashion. Your accessories can go a long way in creating look looks from old pieces.

7#. Coat as dress

Make your coat a standalone statement dress by donning killer heels, metallic belt, cabochon jewelry, or even a lightweight patterned scarf.

8#. Break with tradition

Just because there’s a traditional around when to wear an item of clothing doesn’t mean you have to stick with it. Create your own style and reinvent new looks by breaking with convention. The possibilities are endless! Keep one rule in mind: always balance wearing one out-of-season item by making the rest of your ensemble all about the current one.

9#. Experiment with the unexpected

Similar to mixing up seasonal items let your imagination run wild and experiment with mixing all manner of colors, prints, shapes and textures together. Suzanne Dekyvere is a great example of someone who does this well.
